Mr. President
June 1, 2004
Going into the summer driving season, and with oil and
gasoline prices at near record highs, it is evident we have a problem of
national importance facing our citizens and our economy this year. It's
time for President Bush to show bold leadership on this issue.
The United States Senate is where all good conservative
ideas (and the President's agenda) truly die. Led by liberal Republicans
Olympia Snow (Maine), Lincoln Chafee (Rhode Island), Susan Collins
(Maine), and against the wishes of the two GOP Senators from Alaska,
President Bush's energy bill has been languishing in the Senate for over
three years. It's time for him to bypass these disloyal Republicans and
the legislature altogether by signing an Executive Order opening up the
Artic National Wildlife Reserve (ANWR) for oil exploration.
Immediately.
The shrieks, howls, protests and shrill rhetoric of the
left in opposing the President's "Energy Security" Executive Order can be
met with one response from Republicans and other conservatives - liberals
and Democrats don't care about the plight of "working families" and the
price they have to pay for gas. Over and over and over again, this truth
needs to be repeated and used as a defense of the President's actions. It
won't hurt matters that the unions want ANWR exploration to happen - high
paying jobs and construction projects cannot be argued against by the very
people lamenting a "jobless recovery".
As far as ANWR is concerned, the specific sites for oil
exploration are about as unattractive a piece of real estate as exists in
the entire world. With today's technology, exploration, drilling and
delivery of crude oil for use in the American marketplace can be done with
almost as little environmental impact as, let's say, building a golf
course. To see a sample of what ANWR actually looks like, click here:
http://www.nationalreview.com/images/pic_ANWR_140.jpg. (and please,
let's not buy into the liberal nonsense about there "only" being a short
supply of oil up there, until we explore, we just DON'T KNOW what is under
the barren Alaska tundra).
When the President signs the Executive Order, the Saudis
and OPEC will react predictably by increasing worldwide production of
crude oil, sending gas prices plummeting. They have to, under the threat
of the development of our own supplies of oil, deal with the reality that
if they don't provide an abundant supply of oil for American domestic
consumption we will simply go out and use our own natural resources -
taking trillions of dollars out of the worldwide oil economy and keeping
jobs and profits home where they belong. Right now, seeing the
President's energy bill languishing in the US Senate gives OPEC all the
assurance it needs to gouge American consumers. It's time for the
President, with a stroke of the pen, to set the wheels in motion for
permanent relief of our dependence on Arab nations for our national oil
supply. It's bigger than politics. Our very security depends on it.
